NOP sponsors a variety of events each year in support of our goal to educate Hereford youth and promote Hereford cattle. Many of these initiatives are specifically designed to provide leadership and growth opportunities for Junior owner/exhibitors who will become the future leaders & cattle breeders within the Hereford breed and the US beef cattle industry.
Scholarship Programs
NOP Founders Scholarship

The NOP Founders scholarship was established to honor the women that
founded the NOP in 1965. Two $750 scholarships are
awarded annually
one to a male and one to a female NJHA member.
Ed Bible Scholarship

The NOP established the Ed Bible Scholarship to honor Ed Bible for
his dedication and leadership to the Hereford industry. The first scholarships
were awarded at the 26th Junior National in 1999. This program awards the
top four applicants each year with monetary awards totaling $2500.
Donations to the Ed Bible Scholarship Endowment fund may be directed
to NOP through the current Ed Bible Scholarship Chairman.

Heifer Scholarship Program

The NOP Heifer Scholarship Fund offers a drawing which provides an NJHA pee-wee, junior, intermediate and senior member with a $1000 check to use toward the purchase of a Polled Hereford heifer. The drawing is held in conjunction with the JNHE. All NJHA members in good standing are eligible for the drawing.
Heifer Award Program

Beginning in 2005 the NOP has been able to offer the Heifer Award Program. With the support of generous breeders from across the United States, NOP has been able to award a Polled Hereford heifer to an NJHA member at each of the last two JNHE shows. We will, once again be awarding a heifer in 2008. This year's heifer has been generously offered by Eva Hammon and family. The 2007 heifer was donated by the McKown Family in honor of Luther Munsinger. The heifer, Lucy, will be returning to the 2008 JNHE in Kansas City with exhibitor Justin Moser.
Leadership Awards & Programs
Junior Council Award
Each National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) board member is presented with a $100 scholarship upon completion of their term. This program was initiated
to show NOP’s appreciation to the board members for their hard work, leadership
and dedication to promotion of the Hereford breed.

The National Polled Hereford Show held as part of the National Western Stock
Show in Denver,
Colorado serves as the backdrop for the National Polled Hereford
Queen final selection process and crowning. State Queens ages 16-21 compete for
this position as the official Ambassador of the Polled Hereford breed. The NOP along
with the assistance of many breeders, provide scholarships, travel expenses and
other awards for the queen program.

CHB Ambassador
2007 will mark the inaugural year for the Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) Ambassador
Program sponsored as a collaborative effort of the American Hereford Association,
National Organization of Poll-ettes and American Hereford Women, the CHB Ambassador
program will offer training and the opportunity for one NJHA member and one AHA member
to travel and participate in marketing and outreach opportunities for CHB throughout the
United States. Each ambassador’s tenure is one year with the opportunity for an additional
year’s extension.
Congratulations to Anna Rhodus and Mary Ann Berg who were selected this spring as the first two CHB Ambassadors.
Poll-ette of the Year

Each year NOP recognizes an outstanding member for her leadership, promotion of
Polled Hereford cattle and commitment to advancement of the breed. The process for
nomination and
selection includes nomination by a state association and selection by
a panel of judges who
review the nominations and achievements of the candidates.
This honor is announced at the
NOP Annual Meeting held in conjunction with the
National Western Stock Show in Denver,
Colorado. The award is symbolized by
a gold medallion awarded to each recipient.

Educational Programs
Extemporaneous Speaking Contest - new contest in 2008

Sponsored by the National Organization of Poll-Ettes, this contest is intended to encourage interest in promoting the beef industry and projecting Herefords in a positive image through public speaking. The contest will be held in conjunction with the Junior National Hereford Expo. Contestants must be a member of a state junior Hereford Association and the National Junior Hereford Association.
Two age divisions are included:
·Intermediate Division - for youth 14-17 as of January 1st
·Senior Division -for youth 18-21 as of January 1st
Illustrated Speech Contest

Each summer at the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE), National Junior Hereford
Association
members are provided with an opportunity to combine their oratory skill
with their knowledge of
Hereford cattle in an illustrated speech contest. Four age
divisions compete for a combined total
of $1550 in prize money provided by NOP.
Peewee Speech Contest

The National Organization of Poll-ettes in cooperation with the National Junior Hereford Association sponsors this contest. Peewee Speech is strictly a participation activity for NJHA members from 7 to 9 years of age as of January 1. Its purpose is to encourage public speaking and leadership abilities in youth at an early age. Pee Wee Speech is intended to be an enthusiasm builder for the younger members in hopes they will continue their participation in the National or Illustrated Speech Contest.
Creative Arts Contest

The Junior National Hereford Expo also offers the occasion for the annual Creative
Arts Contest for NJHA members. The purpose of the contest is to encourage junior
members to use their
artistic skills to create an impromptu advertisement. All artwork
is done at the Creative Arts work
station at the JNHE. The contest also provides an
important opportunity for fellowship and making new friends. Monetary awards are
provided by NOP and are offered in four age divisions.
